Global design and engineering firm Arup is teaming up with UK’s Amey to deliver works on the $470 million M4 Smart Motorway between Pitt Street-Mays Hill and Russell Street-Lapstone in New South Wales. The scope of works to be delivered by the Arup and Amey team spans from detailed design up to construction support services for the project.

This project is going to introduce an intelligent technology which will help monitor traffic conditions as well as manage congestion and respond to road incidents in real-time. This project also aims to increase traffic flow, reduce travel time during peak hours by up to 15 minutes, and reduce accidents by up to 30 per cent.

“It is rare that we get an opportunity to influence and shape a city and its transport systems as much as the M4 Smart Motorway will. The project is not only about the M4; it is about delivering cultural change to Sydney’s road network now and into the future. We wanted to be a part of this project because if done right, it will be the blueprint for Sydney’s future motorways,” Arup’s Australasian Transport and Resources Leader Ben Schnitzerling said.

The M4 Smart Motorway’s key features include:

  • Additional traffic sensors and CCTV cameras to monitor traffic conditions
  • Variable message signs, speed limits, and lane use signs
  • Adaptability to motorist’s demands
  • Ramp signals which will assist in managing the traffic flow onto the motorway

The project is expected to be completed by 2020, bringing a select class of Smart Motorways into Australia.
