The Department of Defence has appointed the Downer - FKG Group Joint Venture as managing contractor to deliver the Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA) Remediation Project in Queensland.

A Local Industry Capability Plan (LICP) has also been established to ensure that local businesses will be given opportunities to get involved in the SWBTA project.

“The SWBTA Remediation Project represents the first of the major managing contracts to be signed with a Local Industry Capability Plan.

“Through the Government’s LICP, local businesses and suppliers can expect to benefit from a majority portion of Defence’s investment into projects,” Minister for Defence Marise Payne said.

According to Minister Payne, the joint venture is committed to locally sourcing approximately 80 per cent of construction subcontractors for this project from the Livingstone and Rockhampton areas.

The project’s scope of works will include:

  • Improvement works that will support increased large-scale joint and multinational training activities, including airfield and beach landing site upgrades
  • Improvements to key training facilities to support significantly increased usage, including camp, access road and creek crossing upgrades, and the construction of a new Urban Operations Training Facility

Works are going to be delivered at a highly-sensitive environmental and cultural area, some lying within the Great Barrier Reef marine Park World Heritage Area.

“Downer is proud to be selected with FKG to deliver this important project which will play a critical role in boosting the existing and future training capacity for the Shoalwater Bay military training precinct,” Downer Executive General Manager Defence Brett Sangster said.

FKG Group Managing Director Nick Gardner said that the company is honoured to be delivering this project to support the capability of Australia’s Defence forces together with Downer.

The joint venture will begin the design of the project, with major construction activities to commence by mid-2019. The remediation project is expected to be completed by mid-2022.
