BHP Billiton Iron Ore Pty Ltd has awarded a three-year general maintenance services contract to Downer EDI for works at its Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) operations located in Port Hedland.

“This new contract is testament to our Asset Services capabilities, as well as the high standards of work we provide our customers. We look forward to working closely with BHP,” Downer Chief Executive Officer Grant Fenn said.

Scope of works under Downer’s contract will include providing mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) as well as minor civil, rope access and integration with the maintenance team of BHP in planning and executing services at the Port Hedland operations - including Finucane Island and Nelson Point facilities.

The WAIO operations in the Pilbara region is comprised of four processing hubs as well as five mines that are connected by approximately 1,000 kilometres of rail infrastructure and port facilities. Iron ore from these mines are processed to produce high-grade hematite lump and fines products.

BHP has also recently awarded Monadelphous a $240 million contract for general maintenance services at various BHP mining operations in the Pilbara.
