Early works get underway on QLD Cunningham Hwy safety upgrades
Early works are getting underway on the Cunningham Highway safety upgrade between Main Range National Park at Tregony and Gladfield in Queensland.
Works will be carried out on a 20-kilometre section of the highway to improve safety and reliability on this important freight and community link in southern Queensland.
This section of the Cunningham Highway has deteriorated significantly and is in desperate need of rehabilitation after it was left without long-term investment to maintain road conditions and keep it at pace with growing demand in the region.
"We are delivering the upgrades needed to restore Cunningham Highway, and get Queenslanders home sooner and safer.
"The Cunningham Highway is a critical freight and community link, yet after Labor's decade of decline, this heavily deteriorated section of highway has been left in desperate need of rehabilitation.
"We're getting on with the job and delivering the investment needed to restore this road for families and freight transport," Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said.

Upgrades to the highway will include pavement strengthening, asphalt resurfacing, batter flattening, hazard removal, new signage and audio tactile marking designed to improve driving conditions while also reducing the risk of serious incidents.
Pavement trials will be undertaken before major construction can begin due to the challenging ground conditions through the corridor, ensuring the most effective long-term solution is delivered.
"The Cunningham Highway is one of the most important transport corridors in our region, connecting communities, supporting local businesses and carrying significant freight movements every day.
"Local residents know how important it is that we continue investing in this road, and it's fantastic to see the next stage of improvements moving forward.
"These upgrades will help deliver safer journeys, better reliability and stronger support for the industries and communities that depend on the Cunningham Highway," Member for Southern Downs James Lister said.
