Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for two major work packages for the Sydney Metro West project have been released to market, marking the beginning of the tender process for the delivery of about 50 kilometres’ worth of new metro railway tunnels between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.
“Now more than ever, infrastructure projects like Sydney Metro West support jobs, communities and the economy – Sydney Metro West will create more than 10,000 direct new jobs and 70,000 indirect jobs, with thousands of these jobs being generated by these new tunnelling contracts.
“These contracts will require tunnellers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, concrete workers, truck drivers, labourers and security guards,” Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said.
The EOIs are for the first two tunnelling contracts for Sydney Metro West – from Westmead to Sydney Olympic Park and from Sydney Olympic Park to The Bays.
The first tunnel boring machine (TBM) is anticipated to break ground before the end of 2022. There will be a total of four TBMs for this project.
“Sydney Metro West is a truly once-in-a-century city shaping project that will forever change how we get around Sydney.
“Just as importantly, the construction of this mega project will create many thousands of new jobs and support families across Sydney,” Mr Constance said.
Sydney Metro West is set to deliver a new underground driverless metro railway that will run from Westmead to the city. This project will also double the rail capacity of the corridor, cutting approximately 20 minutes off travel times between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.
