Expressions of Interest (EOI) will be opened for the M80 Ring Road upgrade – the 7.9-kilometre section between Princes Freeway and Western Highway.

This project aims to improve as well as reduce congestion on the M80 Ring Road for the 160,000 motorists passing through each day. The upgrade will deliver a more reliable commute for freight operators, drivers and the local community.

“Along with our upgrade of the Monash Freeway, the M80 Ring Road is a key element of our $1.5 billion infrastructure package to get Victoria moving.

“This particular upgrade project will improve safety and reduce congestion for the 160,000 drivers who use the freeway every day, delivering a more reliable commute for drivers, freight operators and the local community,” said Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher.

The M80 Ring Road upgrade project will involve widening the road from three to four lanes in each direction and it will include widening the entry and exit ramps along this section of the road.

As part of the project, the interchange between Princes Freeway and M80 Ring Road will be upgraded in order to provide better connections between Princes Freeway, Ring Road, West Gate Freeway as well as the future Western Distributor.

“This is part of the Victorian Government’s plan to complete the ring road, and our historic $30 billion infrastructure pipeline which includes our project to widen the Monash, building the Western Distributor, removing 50 level crossings, and building Australia’s biggest public transport project – The Metro Tunnel,” said Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan.

The Boundary Road and Fitzgerald Road interchanges will be upgraded as well to provide improved access to the M80 Ring Road for freight travel from and to Laverton. An electronic freeway management with overhead electronic signs will be installed to better manage traffic and to provide drivers real time information.

This latest section of the M80 Ring Road upgrade, once completed, will greatly improve traffic flow along the 38-kilometres from Princes Freeway at Laverton North to the Greensborough Highway in Greensborough.

“We’re putting people first by creating more than 3,000 jobs and unlocking congestion in the west,” Mr Donnellan said.

Construction on the section between Princes Freeway and Western Highway is expected to commence in 2018.
