EOIs open for northern sections of VIC's M80 Ring Road Upgrade

Victoria’s M80 Ring Road Upgrade has marked a new milestone with Expressions of Interest now open for submission to deliver two northern sections of the highway.

This project will include upgrading a 4-kilometre section of the M80 Ring Road between Sydney Road and Edgars Road as well as a 2-kilometre section between Plenty Road and the Greensborough Highway.

Federal Minister for Cities, urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said that the upgrade works will help relieve congestion in Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs and it will also bring relief to the thousands of motorists who pass through the routes each day.

“We are keeping Victorians moving by boosting capacity for drivers while making the M80 Ring Road safer and more efficient,” Mr Tudge said.

Once the upgrade is completed, the northern section of the M80 Ring Road will have an additional 20 kilometres of new lanes.

This upgrade project will include widening entry and exit ramps at Sydney and Edgars Roads in order to increase the road’s capacity. It will also include the construction of a dedicated exit ramp from the Hume Freeway to Edgars Road to improve safety as well as remove dangerous weaving manoeuvres.

“This upgrade will improve safety and reduce congestion for the many people who use this freeway each day, delivering better journeys for drivers, freight operators and the local community,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said.

This M80 Ring Road project will include installing an intelligent freeway management system that will feature overhead electronic signs to provide real time travel information and to help manage traffic flow.

“The system also includes overhead variable speed limits and ramp signals to manage access onto the Ring Road,” Victorian Senator James Patterson said.

These two upgrades is part of the $1 billion M80 Ring Road Upgrade that is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments, and the projects will be providing a reliable link to all major freeways and interstate links, including the Hume Highway, Princes and West Gate Freeways as well as the future West Gate Tunnel.

Construction on the upgrades between Sydney Road and Edgars Road, and between Plenty Road and the Greensborough Highway is expected to commence in late 2019 and completed by early 2023.
