Expressions of interest (EOIs) have been released for three major freeway upgrade projects in Perth, which are part of the $2.3 billion road and rail projects package announced on May 2017.
These freeway upgrades coincide with the Western Australian Government’s METRONET strategy for Perth, which will create better networks between key activity centres across the region’s metropolitan area.

The two Kwinana Freeway upgrades will be covering approximately 22 kilometres, starting from Russell Road in Success to the Narrows Bridge in South Perth.
The first Smart Freeway in Perth – on the Kwinana Freeway – will be creating an additional lane from Canning Highway to the Narrows Bridge through the use of smart technology. This project is going to be complemented with ramp signals at Farrington Road, South Street, Leach Highway and Cranford Avenue which will balance the flow of traffic onto the freeway.
Construction on this Kwinana Freeway upgrade is expected to commence in late 2018 and is projected to be completed by late 2019 or early 2020.
The Kwinana Freeway is also going to be widened from two to three lanes between Russell Road and Roe Highway. Construction is set to begin by mid-2018 and completed by mid-2019.
On the Mitchell Freeway southbound, an additional lane is going to be constructed on a seven-kilometre stretch from Cedric Street to Vincent Street which will result in four continuous lanes between Erindale Road and Vincent Street.
Construction on the Mitchell Freeway upgrade is expected to commence in mid-2018 and completed by the end of 2019.
