A major milestone has been reached on the Warrnambool and Geelong line upgrades in Victoria, with Expressions of Interest (EOIs) opened for submission to tender for the contract to design and build vital elements of both projects.

“We’re strongly encouraging business, including those in the Geelong and south west regions, to register their interest in carrying out the work.

“The design and construction work for the upgrades will provide a great opportunity for local contractors and suppliers to get involved, bringing wider benefits for Geelong and south West Victoria,” Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said.

The $114 million Warrnambool Line upgrade will include:

  • Construction of a new crossing loop
  • Upgrading signaling between Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool
  • Level crossing upgrades
  • New train stabling facilities at Warrnambool

Planning and site investigations are already underway on the Warrnambool Line upgrade and construction on the project is anticipated to commence by late 2019. The upgrade is expected to be completed by late 2020.

On the other hand, works on the $160 million Geelong Line upgrade will include:

  • Upgrading the Waurn Ponds station with a pedestrian link and second platform
  • An additional track at Waurn Ponds to enable trains to pass each other
  • Armstrong Creek transit corridor planning to consider future land use, environmental issues and development, and population risk

Construction is projected to begin in 2020, with the upgrade expected to be completed in 2021.

Both projects are overseen by Rail Project Victoria (RPV), who has commenced the pre-qualification process that will identify companies that will qualify to tender for the design and construction of the Warrnambool and Geelong line upgrades.
