Four key road upgrades in North QLD given the green light

Construction on four key road upgrades – with a total worth of $95.32 million – on the Flinders Highway and Kennedy Developmental Road in North Queensland are set to begin by mid-2017.

The four key road upgrades are:

  • Pavement strengthening and rehabilitation on the Flinders Highway, from Townsville to Torrens Creek (worth $17 million); expected to be completed by early 2019
  • Upgrade culverts on the Flinders Highway, from Charters Towers to Richmond (worth $25 million); expected to be completed by late 2019
  • Widening works on a section of the Kennedy Developmental Road, from Mount Garnet to The Lynd (worth $3.32 million); expected to be completed by late 2017
  • Progressive sealing of the Kennedy Developmental Road, from The Lynd to Hughenden (worth $50 million); expected to be completed by late 2020

“For me these projects are always about jobs and the sooner we can get surveyors and geotechs on site, the sooner we can get the heavy machinery on site to get major works underway.

“I’m relieved that we can now get on with delivering these vital upgrade projects that will greatly improve safety and travel times on the Flinders Highway and Kennedy Developmental Road,” said Treasurer Curtis Pitt.

According to Minister for Main Roads Mark Bailey, construction on the four projects will commence in the coming months.

“The Palaszczuk Government has had our funding set aside from the beginning and we’ve worked hard to get Federal funding for Queensland roads under NARP (Northern Australia Roads Programme) because we know how important our roads are to North Queensland’s economy,” Mr Bailey said.
