Construction contracts for five major projects in Western Sydney have been awarded, with nearly $3 billion in road upgrades to power ahead to deliver the capacity needed for one of Australia's fastest growing regions.
The contract awards are for the following projects:
The major projects, which are jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales Governments, will help unlock capacity on Western Sydney's road network, upgrade key intersection, improve local connections and support access to the new Western Sydney International Airport.
"This massive joint investment with the New South Wales Government will prepare Western Sydney for the future by unlocking capacity across our road network, as well as provide reliable access to the new Western Sydney International Airport.
"With contracts locked in for these five major projects, the Australian Government is delivering on its promise to build a better traffic and transport future for Western Sydney, which will slash travel times, boost safety and keep this growing region moving forward," Acting Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Kristy McBain said.
"The Minns Labor Government is working with the Commonwealth to upgrade roads across Western Sydney so families can spend less time in traffic and more time together.
"This investment delivers what the Liberals and Nationals failed to do when they allowed development to run rampant across Western Sydney without the essential roads and infrastructure needed to keep up," Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said.
"This is an incredibly exciting time for Western Sydney. Contracts are now signed on five major road projects worth almost $3 billion, with construction on track to begin by the end of this year.
"It's a stark contrast to the former Liberal-National Government, who talked up best-in-class infrastructure for this region but never delivered the basics. Western Sydney is finally getting the roads it was promised, and needed, for years," NSW Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison said.
Other significant road projects in Western Sydney are also progressing, with consultation now underway for Spring Farm Parkway Stage 2 and designs for the Windsor Road Upgrade at Rouse Hill and Picton Bypass to be placed on public display in the coming months.
Moreover, planning approval is in place for the $200 million Homebush Bay Drive, Australia Avenue and Underwood Road intersection upgrade at Sydney Olympic Park and Homebush, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
This upgrade will replace the existing roundabout with traffic signals and add lanes to improve traffic flow and safety at this key location that sees almost 5,000 vehicles an hour during weekday peak times. This project will also improve connections for people walking and riding.
Another project that is progressing is the Bandon Road project, with project approval expected soon and tender process underway.
With these milestones, the projects are a step closer to bringing more capacity to Western Sydney's roads, better connections for communities and businesses, and critical infrastructure to support the region's continued growth.
"Our $440 million upgrade to Garfield Road East will make a real difference for our local community, ensuring families spend less time behind the wheel and more time at home.
"I was proud to secure funding for this vital upgrade, and with the contract now signed I'm looking forward to construction getting underway and residents starting to see the benefits," Federal Member for Greenway Michelle Rowland said.
"The billion-dollar Mamre Road Stage 2 upgrade widens the corridor and overhauls key intersections delivering a phenomenal win for our community and the broader Western Sydney economy.
"The $190 million investment in The Horsley Drive at the M7 and Wallgrove interchange will ensure Western Sydney motorists will spend less time sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic as well as dramatically improving safety and traffic flow at a critical junction with the M7," Federal Member for McMahon Chris Bowen said.
"The $247 million upgrade of Henry Lawson Drive will deliver smoother, safer and more efficient journeys for commuters while improving access to Bankstown Airport and local sporting fields," Federal Member for Banks Zhi Soon said.
"Access to the M5 Motorway is essential for Banks commuters and businesses. This $247 million investment in Henry Lawson Drive will help commuters get home faster and safer, upgrade access to Bankstown Airport and the surrounding industrial areas, and improve amenity at the sporting grounds at Milperra," Federal Member for Werriwa Anne Stanley said.
