Fulton Hogan wins $45m contract for works on Amrun bauxite project

Rio Tinto has awarded Fulton Hogan a $45 million contract for works on the Amrun bauxite project in Western Cape York, Queensland.

Fulton Hogan will be constructing a 10.9-gigalitre dam which will supply water to Amrun. The dam is going to be called ‘Arraw’ – a local word for Emu – which was chosen by the Traditional Owners.

As part of their contract, Fulton Hogan’s scope of works will involve the development of the impoundment area, embankment and intake infrastructure for the dam as well as other critical supporting infrastructure for the dam which will include a spillway, fishway and access corridor.

“Fulton Hogan is a renowned leader in building water storage dams and reservoirs in challenging terrains. We look forward to our successful collaboration on this project,” said Rio Tinto Growth & Innovation group executive Stephen McIntosh.

“We are delighted to bring our dam building technology and innovation to the Amrun project. Our construction teams are experienced in the challenges of working in a bulk water environment and strictly share Rio Tinto’s commitment to a safe work environment,” said Fulton Hogan CEO for Construction Peter Kessler.

Construction is set to commence in the first quarter of 2017 and is expected to create up to 120 jobs for local workers.
