The Australian and New South Wales Governments are working together to deliver the next stage of the Henry Lawson Drive upgrade, with each government contributing $110 million towards the project.
Henry Lawson Drive is a vital north-south connection in Sydney and it carries about 38,000 vehicles each day during peak periods. This road follows the northern bank of the Georges River and it passes through Georges Hall, East Hills and onto Peakhurst.
This corridor varies between a single lane in each direction to a six-lane dual carriageway road towards Peakhurst.
“This is welcome funding, allowing us to fast track Stage 1B of Henry Lawson Drive.
“The work on Henry Lawson Drive builds on the nearby $144 million Stage 1A upgrade that has made it easier to travel between Auld Avenue and Tower Road, and further upgrades to the north in Georges Hall,” NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said.
The next stage of the upgrade – Stage 1B in Milperra – spans approximately 1.8 kilometres between Auld Avenue to the north and the approach to the M5 Motorway to the south.
This project will include widening Henry Lawson Drive to a four-lane divided road as well as upgrading intersections to improve road safety and connections to Bankstown Airport and surrounding areas.
The upgrade will also include building new walking and cycling paths, and improving access to the Auld Avenue sporting fields and Milperra Sports Centre.
“Ducking and weaving between two and four lane sections of Henry Lawson Drive between the M5 and Milperra Road will no longer be a thing when these vital works are complete.
“This road sees tens of thousands of cars during weekday peak periods, but also on the weekend as people head to Flower Power.
“Widening this road will ensure we have the capacity to accommodate the traffic on these roads, 24 hours, seven days a week,” Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said.

The Queensland Government will be investing approximately $200 million towards the Rockhampton Ring Road project, with which the Australian Government has already committed $800 million for its delivery.
Both the Australian and South Australian Governments are injecting additional funding to ensure the delivery of the South Eastern Freeway Upgrade.
A new five-year State Road Funds to Local Government Agreement (SRFLGA) has been signed by the Western Australian Government with the WA Local Government Association (WALGA).
