Queensland is set to see a boost in jobs as well as a significant boost in the local renewable hydrogen industry as Hydrogen Utility (H2U) selects Gladstone as the location for it’s $1.61 billion H2-HubTM Gladstone project.
“A project of this scale requires a large, accessible site, where complex industrial processing can occur.
“Through the Queensland Government’s land use planning and property development agency, Economic Development Queensland (EDQ), H2U have purchased a 171-hectare site at Yarwun in the Gladstone State Development Area, which is in close proximity to the export precinct at Fisherman’s Landing,” Minister for State Development Cameron Dick said.
H2-HubTM is a chemical complex that will produce green hydrogen and ammonia at industrial-scale and it has the potential to create up to 100 jobs once operational as well as drive in new export opportunities for green hydrogen and ammonia.
“With green hydrogen and ammonia emerging as a strong, competitive energy source, we are really pleased that Gladstone is on the radar for companies seeking to establish large-scale industrial projects.
“This will assist to diversify Gladstone’s economy and provide secure, ongoing operation jobs for workers and income for their families,” Mr Dick said.
The new chemical complex is going to be built in stages and will integrate about 3GW in electrolysis plant and will have an ammonia production capacity of up to 5,000 tonnes per day.
“Queensland with its strong existing trading relationship with Japan is well placed to capitalise on the opportunities from this new industry, including sustained investment in renewable energy generation, and the transition of jobs and skills from extractive resources to a future-proof industry.
“Gladstone is an obvious choice for locating industry-scale green hydrogen and ammonia facilities: its existing skill base, industrial port eco-system, and strategic location in the Queensland grid, all contribute to provide a unique springboard for the establishment of this new industry,” H2U CEO and Founder Dr Attilio Pigneri said.
Dr Pigneri added that the project will now progress into master planning and detailed feasibility, with necessary approvals secured by 2023. H2-HubTM is anticipated to begin operations in 2025.
