Great Eastern Highway upgrade in Kalgoorlie-Boulder WA begins construction

Works to duplicate the 2.43-kilometre section of Western Australia’s Great Eastern Highway between Anzac Drive and Gatacre Drive in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder regions has commenced, with Highway Construction Pty Ltd delivering the upgrade with a $15.8 million contract award.

“It’s been rewarding to oversee this project from its inception - listening to the heavy transport industry before the election, watching the design take shape, dealing with the service relocations and now reaching the much-anticipated construction phase.

“The end result of a safer, more efficient road will be worth the wait for local businesses and residents,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

Scope of works will include:

  • Widening the existing road to two lanes in each direction
  • Upgrade of the Anzac Drive / West Kalgoorlie Road / Great Eastern Highway intersection
  • Improvements to six other intersections, as well as adjoining driveways
  • Improvements to the drainage system, which will divert stormwater run-off through an underground pipe system to help mitigate local flooding issues
  • Construction of cycling and pedestrian paths
  • Improved street lighting

Upgrading the last section of the Great Eastern Highway with a single carriageway will improve safety as well as accessibility for the 8,000 vehicles passing through this road each day.

“The upgrade of the Anzac Drive to Gatacre Drive section of Great Eastern Highway comes 25 years after Anzac Drive itself was constructed by the infamous ‘Rebel Roadbuilders’.

“It’s been a great effort by all involved to get the project to the stage it’s at now and I look forward to seeing the contractors finishing the job over the next few months,” Mining and Pastoral Region MLC Kyle McGinn said.

The upgrade is due to be completed in early 2020, with up to 100 jobs supported during its construction.
