Green light given to construction of $164m Bomen Solar Farm in NSW

The New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment has given renewable energy company Renew Estate the planning approval for its $164 million Bomen Solar Farm development located near the Bomen Business Park.

The 120MW solar farm is going to be built on a 250-hectare site located approximately seven kilometres north east of the Wagga Wagga CBD. The project will also include a 40MW battery storage.

Once the solar farm is operational, it is expected to produce more than 230GWh of renewable energy annually - enough to power up to 36,000 homes.

Construction on the Bomen Solar Farm is expected to completed in the fourth quarter of 2019.

“All elements needed for development such as connection, procurement, offtake and financing are well advanced, and we will proceed with construction of this project shortly. We believe that the Bomen Solar Farm project will play an important role in the development and expansion of the Bomen Business Park,” Renew Estate Director Simon Currie said.

This large-scale solar project is anticipated to require up to 200 workers during peak construction.

Mr Currie added: “We are committed to maximising the opportunities for local industry and service providers in the construction of this project, particularly given the skilled local labour force and strong industrial capabilities of the region.”

Renew Estate is partly owned by Wirsol Energy, a German company that has developed a number of solar projects in Australia.

“This is an exciting time for the solar industry in Australia and Bomen Solar Farm will assist Wirsol in reaching our target of 1GW of solar generation in Australia,” Wirsol Energy Managing Director Mark Hogan said.
