The Burpengary station is going to be temporarily closed from January 2024 to enable vital accessibility upgrades to be carried out, and Queensland Rail has launched a survey for alternative travel options while the station is closed.

This station upgrade is part of a $53 million initiative delivered through the Queensland Government's Station Accessibility Upgrade Program.

“Having a fully accessible train station available can change the life of someone living with a disability, so it’s great to see the upgrade of Burpengary station take a step forward.

“No one knows how to improve the station better than those who use it every day, so jump online and give us your suggestions,” Minister for Transport Mark Bailey said.

Rebuilding Burpengary station to modern accessibility standards will involve raising station platforms and train door levels to reduce the gap, making boarding trains safer and easier.

Lifts to a station overpass that connects to the platforms will also be made available for train passengers in wheelchairs, with walking frames, parents with prams and people with luggage.

Other improvement works on the station include upgrading customer facilities such as accessible toilets, disability-compliant ticket windows, improved seating and extended platform shelters. Improved bicycle storage and new security cameras will also be installed as part of the upgrade.

Queensland Rail is planning to provide replacement bus services from Morayfield to Narangba according to the regular timetable. To ensure all station users are covered, a survey has been launched to ask customers directly about their travel patterns and how they can be best supported when work commences in January next year.

“We want to hear directly from those customers who’ll be affected by these closures so we can work out how best we can support them while their upgrade is progressing from January next year.

“This feedback will be used to ensure there is appropriate alternative transport in place and help us prepare for any extra patronage at surrounding stations.

“We understand this will change the way customers travel for a period of time, but we’re committed to making our rail network accessible for everyone in the long-term,” Queensland Rail Head of SEQ Scott Riedel said.

Site establishment at Burpengary station is already underway.

Key features of the Burpengary station upgrade include:

  • A new footbridge with lift access
  • Improved accessible parking
  • Full length high-level platforms
  • Upgraded hearing augmentation loops and tactile ground surface indicators
  • Upgraded security cameras and lighting
  • New wayfinding and platform signage
  • New station office and facilities

The upgraded Burpengary station is expected to reopen in the second half of 2024, subject to construction and weather conditions.

The projects under the upgrade program are part of the rail revolution happening across the South East and are expected to support 1,250 local jobs.

“These upgrades will make Burpengary station better for everybody, but with the closures there’ll be some disruptions.

“This will be inconvenient, but when reopened the upgraded Burpengary station will ensure everyone can catch the train with ease, whether they are using a wheelchair, are injured, or simply travelling with a pram or luggage.

“Please, if you have any feedback or catch the train, now is the chance to have your say to make sure we support you in the best way possible,” Member for Kurwongbah Shane King said.
