Hundreds of jobs to be created with new $1.6bn FLNG development

A Major Project Status has been granted to a $1.6 billion floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) by the Australian Government, and the project is going to be developed by Perth-based Transborders Energy.

In order to progress this development, Transborders is working with its partners, Add Energy and TechnipFMC, and it technical advisor MODEC as well as a major Asian LNG Buyer.

“We are very pleased to receive the Major Project designation… We look forward to working with the Australian Government to deliver our predetermined, low-cost FLNG Solution for monetizing a range of stranded gas resources in the Australian jurisdiction,” Transborders Energy Managing Director Daein Cha said.

This project is expected to support up to 150 direct jobs during its commissioning and hook-up, with approximately 100 direct and 200 indirect jobs over the life of the project.

Minister for Jobs and Innovation Michaelia Cash said that the project will receive assistance from the major project facilitator agency in navigating through the Australian Government’s approval process.

The Minister also welcomes the projects potential to create jobs for the region as well as its innovative approach.

“This project is a great example of how innovation within our existing industries is creating new jobs for Australians.

“Innovation isn’t just about new start-ups, innovation is doing what we currently do well and improving it,” Ms Cash said.

This FLNG project is expected to increase the country’s gas liquefied natural gas exports by up to 1.2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) over a 25-year lifespan beginning in 2025.

The small-scale FLNG vessel is going to be deployed in a gas field that is previously difficult to retrieve and commercialise.

“This project, and other FLNG development, are helping to build Australia’s reputation in the offshore gas sector. The Australian Government is dedicated to ensuring Australia’s resource and energy sectors are globally competitive, innovative and continue to create jobs,” Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Matt Canavan said.
