Works are now underway on the $55 million project that will refurbish the Cairns Airport domestic terminal - or Cairns Airport T2 - with local contractor Hutchinson Builders delivering the much needed terminal upgrade.

“As a local builder who employs local workers we are delighted to be working on this project and look forward to delivering this world class facility for Cairns,” Hutchinson Builders Team leader Paul De Jong said.

The upgrade will include expanding the terminal to 10,000-SQM with the departure halls featuring more seating and an improved layout to simplify navigation around the terminal. The upgraded terminal will also have 2,000-SQM of additional dining and retail space to showcase the best of Tropical North Queensland

Cairns Airport is the second busiest regional centre in the country and this upgrade will future-proof the terminal, with a projected growth in passenger numbers over the next 10 years.

The Cairns Airport T2 upgrade is anticipated to support over 300 jobs during construction and a further 150 permanent jobs upon completion.

“We anticipate the expansion of T2 will generate 350 jobs during construction. This includes Hutchies’ own people and our subcontractors. Construction activity will also support the local economy through consultants, suppliers and the local community throughout the project,” Hutchinson Builders Managing Director Greg Quinn said.

Works are going to be carried out in nine parts to allow the airport to remain fully operational. The first stage of the upgrade is now underway with the entire project due for completion by the end of 2020.
