A new Sydney Football Stadium is set to open its doors in time for the 2022 NRL Grand Final as construction draws closer on the $828 million stadium with the awarding of the $735 million construction contract to John Holland in December 2019.
“We are committed to creating a stadium that is worthy of Sydney’s status as a global city. We believe the new Sydney Football Stadium will be Australia’s premier sporting and entertainment venue, and we can’t wait to get started,” John Holland CEO Joe Barr said.
“We will work with stakeholders to make sure fans can move easily and safely through the precinct on Sydney Cricket Ground and will be ready in time for the 2022 NRL Grand Final,” John Holland Executive General Manager - Building David Lehmann said.
Under this contract, John Holland will establish a pre-employment program for 30 Aboriginal as well as Torres Strait Islander people on the project. The company will also support local Aboriginal owned and managed businesses for construction services, supply chain and support services.
Once completed, the new state-of-the-art Sydney Football Stadium at Moore Park will help boost the economy and promote a strong cultural and sporting sector.
“We’ve seen the benefits contemporary stadiums bring, with the opening of Bankwest Stadium in Parramatta, and we are confident our investment in the Sydney Football Stadium will deliver the same long-term benefits to NSW,” Acting Sport Minister Geoff Lee said.
“We are getting on with the job of delivering the best sporting and cultural facilities so that we can create the jobs and investment our state needs,” Planning Minister Rob Stokes said.
