The New South Wales Government has awarded the John HollandLaing O’Rourke joint venture a $240 million contract for upgrade works on the Sydney Metro Sydenham Station.

“This city-shaping project is a critical part of the transformation of the overall Sydney Metro project, and the key meeting point of the new Sydney Metro and existing Sydney Trains networks,” Lain O’Rourke Australia Hub Managing Director Cathal O’Rourke said.

The contract will include major railway upgrade works to the existing rail system – which will allow the introduction of the Sydney Metro system at Sydenham Station. The upgrade will also involve reconfiguring the existing track and rail systems to segregate the T3 Bankstown Line and the goods line as well as installing metro tracks and rail systems, including crossover and turnback facilities.

The main features of the Sydenham Station upgrade will include:

  • Two new station entrances at Burrows Road and Railway Parade
  • A new concourse over the station with lifts and stairs to each platform, including the two Sydney Metro platforms – which means that the station will have two new concourses, one at each end of the platforms
  • Straightened metro platforms and platform screen doors on the Sydney Metro platforms to keep people and objects away from tracks and allows trains to get in and out of stations much faster
  • Easy interchange for passengers between Sydney Trains and Sydney Metro services
  • Improved interchange for bus customers

“They Sydenham upgrade project will help support economic and social development in Sydney, and improve the ease with which people move around in their day-to-day lives.

“More than 100 people will be employed on the project, creating jobs and opportunities on the southern fringe of Sydney’s CBD,” John Holland Chief Executive Officer Joe Barr said.

Construction on the Sydenham Station Upgrade is set to commence in 2018.
