In 2016, John Holland was awarded the contract to deliver safety and accessibility upgrades to the Newmarket and Alderley Stations.

“We care about ensuring all rail customers have safe access to transport, regardless of their age and ability. We are passionate about making it easier for people to get around our cities, and minimising disruption during the building process,” John Holland CEO Joe Barr said.

Major construction activities at Boondall station is set to commence later this year.

According to Member for Nudgee Leanne Linard, early works to prepare the site will continue ahead of major construction.

“Queensland Rail has been undertaking works at the site on foundations, structures and platforms , in preparation for the relocation of overhead electrical equipment.

“With the John Holland Group now engaged, customers will see major work start to take shape at Boondall station from later this year, once detailed construction plans have been completed,” Ms Linard said.

This upgrade is expected to support up to 250 jobs for suppliers and contractors from the local construction industry.

The upgrade at Boondall station will include:

  • A new footbridge with lifts
  • Raising sections of the platform to provide easier access on and off the train
  • Hearing aid loops
  • Extended platform shelters
  • Upgraded lighting and CCTV
  • New wayfinding platform signage
  • Platform tactiles

These works will be providing commuters with a step-free path of travel through the train station.

“The upgrade will ensure everyone, including customers using mobility aids, seniors and people with prams, can travel safely and easily.

“Boondall is a key station for Brisbane’s expanding northern suburbs which caters for large crowds attending the nearby Brisbane Entertainment Centre and is one of the busiest on the Shorncliffe line, with almost 300,000 customer trips recorded last year,” Ms Linard said.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said that Boondall station will remain open throughout construction, although there may be temporary disruptions to facilities as works progress.

“Queensland Rail will ensure customers and the surrounding community are kept well informed ahead of any changes.

“We thank our customers in advance for their patience during these important works, and look forward to delivering an upgraded and independently accessible Boondall station for the community,” Mr Bailey said.
