John Holland wins contract for works on WA Claremont Station project

Approximately 300 jobs are expected to be supported through the tracklaying project at the Claremont Station in Western Australia, with construction a step closer to beginning following the awarding of the $36 million tracklaying and civil works contract to John Holland.

“The $36 million contract will help support 300 local jobs in the community, an excellent outcome for the project,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

Under this contract award, John Holland will be undertaking track, civil and electrical works as well as installation of an underpass on the Claremont Station METRONET project, especially on the turnbacks that are set to be installed at the station in early 2021.

The turnbacks that are to be installed at Claremont Station will allow trains to head back the way they came after passengers disembark at the station. This, in turn, enables more train services at the station to meet the long-term passenger growth on both the Fremantle and Forrestfield-Airport Link lines.

“We know significant development is taking place around Claremont Station – which is currently the third-busiest on the Fremantle Line – and we expect patronage of this station to increase significantly, which is why this upgrade is so important.

“Claremont Station is located halfway along the Fremantle Line, so is ideally positioned to host turnbacks – it's a vital part of ensuring our rail network is well-placed to deal with future demand particularly when the Forrestfield-Airport Link comes online in late 2021,” Ms Saffioti said.

The Claremont Station project includes:

  • Installing two turnback facilities west of Claremont Station
  • Refurbishing station facilities and upgrading the platform’s security building
  • Improving station accessibility to meet the Disability and Discrimination Act
  • Expanding bus facilities on Gugeri Street
  • Removing the western pedestrian level crossing
  • Development of a pedestrian underpass west of the station to improve north-south connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Realigning existing rail infrastructure
  • Modifying the existing principal shared path (PSP)

Works on the Claremont Station project is due to be completed in late 2021.
