Laing O'Rourke has formally signed the contract to work with Department of Defence as Managing Contractor for the Planning Phase of the Larrakeyah Redevelopment and HMAS Coonawarra Facilities to Support Naval Operations in the Nothern Territory.

Laing O'Rourke's Region Director Stuart Crofts said that the contract signing earlier in the week made the construction company's role official and signalled the start of work on the planning phase.

“This contract not only builds on our 30-plus years of Defence delivery experience, but also means we will be concurrently delivering Defence assets in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria and now the Northern Territory,” confirmed Mr Crofts.

These projects include the Battlefield Airlifter (BFA) in Amberley and AIR 5428 Pilot Training Systems Facilities across Australia that Laing O'Rourke is currently delivering.

During the Larrakeyah Base planning phase, activities will involve obtaining necessary approvals which will enable the project to progress to delivery phase.

The works will involve upgrades to current Defence service infrastructure including accommodation, a wharf facility and fuel infrastructure to enhance northern operations.

NT Chief Minister affirmed the government is working alongside NT Master Builders Association to maximise local involvement on the Larrakeyah Base project.

Planning is expected to continue until early 2018, with the delivery expected to occur between 2018 and mid-2020.
