A consortium comprising of LendLease, GIC and Urbanest has been appointed by the University of Melbourne to deliver a $500 million innovation hub in Carlton.
The new innovation hub will be located on the site of the former Royal Women’s Hospital – on the corner of Swanston and Grattan Streets. The 62,000-SQM development will be featuring commercial space, retail areas, child care and student accommodation. The innovation hub is also going to be home to the Melbourne Science Gallery.
The University of Melbourne will be occupying approximately 75 per cent of the commercial space and about 10,500-SWM will be on the market for lease.

According to LendLease Managing Director Mark Menhinnit, this project will see the old Royal Women’s Hospital site revitalised into an open, light and contemporary precinct that will meet the highest standards of design and sustainability as well as honour the history and heritage of the site.
“This is a significant partnership for LendLease and the University of Melbourne on a project that will set a new benchmark in education and industry collaboration in a purpose-built precinct.
“It will also create a vibrant hub for the Carlton and broader Melbourne community with shops, cafes, public spaces and interconnected laneways providing pedestrians with direct access to Swanston, Grattan and Cardigan streets,” Mr Menhinnit said.
Construction on the new innovation hub is expected to commence in 2018.
