Local builder Densford Civil Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to deliver Phase 1 of the Stephenson Avenue Extension project in Western Australia, with works expected to begin in August of this year.
“We promised this at the election, and we’re delivering on that promise, with up to 100 local jobs to be created in the process – it's projects like this that help support our economy and local business.
“Not only will this project create and support local jobs, it reflects our commitment to ensuring key infrastructure is in place that will help reduce congestion and unlock private investment in a key hub outside of Perth,” Premier Mark McGowan said.
The Stephenson Avenue Extension is going to be delivered in phases:
The delivery of the first phase is going to be managed by the City of Stirling and will include building a new connection to Ellen Stirling Boulevard at Howe Street and Oswald Street.
This project, together with other road developments that are also underway, will help transform Perth’s road network.
“You can see construction activity everywhere across the city with the Mitchell Freeway being transformed, Armadale Road to North Lake Road Bridge and of course the massive METRONET.
“Making sure we are injecting much needed infrastructure funds into the WA economy and creating jobs for hard working West Australians is a top priority as we make our way out of the COVID pandemic,” Federal Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said.
Phase 2 of the Stephenson Avenue Extension project is one of the 24 transport projects in the State that are being fast tracked towards construction to support jobs during the pandemic.
“We anticipate seeking expressions of interest from industry in July to build phase two of the Stephenson Avenue Extension, with construction scheduled to begin early in 2021.
“This project will provide local businesses with a new transport network, connections for cyclists through the construction of a principal shared path and access to public transport,” WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.
Once completed, the Stephenson Avenue Extension will improve accessibility as well as connectivity and travel times for the local community.
“This new infrastructure will ease traffic congestion and reduce travel times for local families while also improving the accessibility to the Stirling City Centre, connecting people with jobs and services,” Federal Member for Curtin Celia Hammond said.
“The Stephenson Avenue Extension project is a key component of the vision for Stirling City Centre, which will work to unlock private investment in the area, relieve traffic congestion and increase employment opportunities,” City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said.
The Stephenson Avenue Extension project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian Governments, each contributing $65 million and $60 million respectively.
