The delivery of the $900 million New Melton Hospital in Victoria is ramping up with major construction now underway.

Over the next six months, works will focus on:

  • Excavation including rock breaking and soil removal
  • Trenching for in-ground services to be installed
  • Piling works and retaining wall construction
  • Pouring of concrete footings and ground slabs, forming the foundations of the hospital
  • Installation of the first tower crane

“This is an important step as we get on and build a new hospital for families in our western suburbs – because only Labor invests in health and invests in the west,” Premier Jacinta Allan said.

“It’s exciting to see major construction start on this massive project – a significant step towards transforming Melton into a major hub for health, education, jobs and training,” Member for Melton Steve McGhie said.

Once completed, the new Melton Hospital will have the capacity to provide treatment to up to 130,000 patients annually and see almost 60,000 patients in its 24-hour emergency department.

The brand-new healthcare facility will support the growing and diverse communities of Caroline Springs, Rockbank, Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Gisborne – providing the people of Melbourne’s west the care they need closer to home.

Key features of the new Melton Hospital include:

  • A 24-hour emergency department
  • At least 274 beds
  • An intensive care unit
  • Maternity and neonatal services
  • Mental health services, radiology services and ambulatory care
  • A new education and training hub for doctors and nurses in Melbourne’s west

The project is being built on a 68,000-SQM site on Ferris Road, and it is designed to meet the health needs of the community as it continues to grow.

The new Melton Hospital will also be an important addition to the hospital network in the west, working with Sunshine Hospital as well as the new $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital to reduce wait times across the region.

This new hospital is set to become Victoria’s first fully electric hospital, utilising carbon neutral power from the day it becomes operational.

The New Melton Hospital Project is expected to create over 2,400 jobs during its construction phase, and nearly 4,000 health related jobs on-site during the hospital’s first year of operations.

This project is on track to be completed in 2029.

“The new Melton Hospital will create thousands of local jobs during construction, and once complete will be a world-class addition to healthcare in Melbourne’s outer west,” Minister for Health Infrastructure Melissa Horne said.

“This world-class hospital will not only give locals access to the best care, but it will create hundreds of new jobs and career opportunities in healthcare closer to home,” Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas said.

“The new hospital will include important mental health services – making it easier for people who require care to get the support they need, when they need it,” Minister for Mental Health Ingrid Stitt said.

Last year, Exemplar Health consortium was awarded the contract to deliver the new Melton Hospital. The consortium is comprised of Capella Capital as sponsor and investor, Lendlease Infrastructure Investments and Invesis as investors, Lendlease a builder, and Honeywell and Compass Group as facilities and maintenance managers.
