Mordialloc is a step closer to becoming boom gate free as major construction gets underway to remove three more dangerous bayside level crossings along the delivery of a new premium Mordialloc Station.
Crews have commenced a 10-day construction blitz and will be working round the clock to build foundations of the new rail bridges at McDonald Street, Mordialloc and Station Street, Aspendale.
Works will involve drilling over 100 holes up to 31 metres deep and demolishing parts of the existing Mordialloc Station.
At Bear Street in Mordialloc, signalling infrastructure and boom gates will be dismantled and the road will be permanently closed to traffic to maintain access to the nearby stabling facility. This project will transform the area under the rail bridge into a vibrant new station precinct with safer connections to nearby shops and transport.
“Works are ramping up in Mordialloc with major construction now underway on the new rail bridges that will see three dangerous level crossings gone for good next year.
“The Frankston Line will be level crossing free by 2029, transforming the way locals live, work, and travel,” Minister for Transport Infrastructure Gabrielle Williams said.
To enable works to be carried out safely, buses will replace trains on sections of the Frankston Line from 18 August, and when train services resume on the 29 August, all services will arrive and depart from Platform 1 at Mordialloc Station.
In addition, Frankston Line services will be running on an altered timetable until mid-2026 to minimise disruption to passengers while enabling construction to continue on the elevated rail bridges and new station.
Mordialloc will be boom gate free and the new Mordialloc Station will open next year.
The new elevated station will feature modern facilities, improved accessibility including entrances at both ends of the platforms, improved lighting, public spaces and landscaping with 86,000 trees, shrubs and grasses.
More than 26,000 vehicles travel through the three level crossings each day with boom gates down for over 40 minutes in the morning peak.
Once completed, this project will deliver travel time savings while also keeping pedestrians and drivers safer with.
The Victorian Government is removing 110 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2030, with about 86 already gone for good.
