Regional roads across North and North Eastern Victoria are receiving major maintenance works to make them safer and more reliable for all motorists as well as preserve the longevity of the roads.

Works will be taking place in both regions over the next 12 months according to Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan.

Improvements worth over $40 million has begun in order to rehabilitate sections of road to make them smoother as well as resistant to more damage.

“We’re working to make the roads people rely on every day safer and more reliable – to ensure parents can take their kids to school safely, or get to work on time,” Mr Donnellan said.

Major repairs and maintenance works will be done to the following roads and highways:

More than 250 kilometres of road will be resealed across the two regions as well. Sections of road will include:

  • Murray Valley Highway
  • Melba Highway
  • Borung Highway
  • Pyrenees Highway
  • Great Alpine

Regional contractors – including the North Eastern Maintenance Alliance – will be delivering the works.

This project will be able to help reduce the level of deterioration of road surfaces and, in turn, provide a boost to local regional producers by making their trip to the factory or to the market more reliable. Improving the roads will also help ensure that visitors to the region can easily and safely access local businesses and attractions, which supports local tourism.

“The North and North Eastern region is Victoria’s food bowl, tourism playground and a key national freight hub, and these works will help to continue to drive these industries,” Mr Donnellan said.
