Major works begin on $2bn new Bankstown Hospital project

A key construction milestone has been reached on the $2 billion Bankstown Hospital project in New South Wales as demolition and dismantling of existing buildings on site begin.

As the project enters a significant phase in its delivery, communities in Sydney’s south-west can now have more confidence that their new state-of-the-art hospital is becoming a reality.

The New South Wales Government’s record investment in this project is the single largest capital investment in a public hospital in the State’s history, and it reflects the commitment to better public healthcare and the growing Western Sydney community.

“Western Sydney hospitals are under significant and sustained pressure, and this major investment will mean local families can access the care they need, closer to home.

“This is the largest investment ever made in a hospital in NSW history, a clear indication of both the scale of growth in Western Sydney and the importance of delivering world-class health infrastructure to meet that demand.

“With a bigger Emergency Department, more beds and new treatment spaces, this expansion will make a real difference for one of Australia’s fastest growing and most diverse communities,” Premier Chris Minns said.

“The new Bankstown Hospital will create a modern health and education hub that transforms the CBD, creates local job opportunities and provides world-class healthcare facilities that our community has long deserved,” Member for Bankstown Jihad Dib said.

The interior strip-out of old buildings on site is now underway to prepare for the removal of main structures. Demolition and site remediation works will continue throughout 2026.

The new Bankstown Hospital will deliver more beds and treatment spaces, enhance health services within a new 14-storey building, and provide more parking spaces with a 10-storey car park. A separate emergency drop-off area and dedicated emergency parking will also be provided to improve the arrival experience for patients and carers.

The final service offering for the new health facility will be finalised as planning progresses. The expected services include:

• Expanded emergency department
• Operating theatres
• Intensive care unit
• Surgical and medical services
• Women and children’s health services including maternity
• Mental health inpatient services
• Ambulatory care
• Cancer services
• Aged care health services
• Multi-storey car park and on-ground parking

“Every family in Western Sydney deserves access to world-class healthcare close to where they live, and that is exactly why the Minns Labor Government is building and delivering the new Bankstown Hospital.

“After more than a decade of neglect under the Liberals, the new hospital will transform Bankstown with the modern medical services families in this growing community deserve,” Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said.

“The $2 billion new Bankstown Hospital is estimated to support approximately 3,600 direct jobs with the potential for supporting thousands of indirect jobs over the life of the project. This will help boost the local economy during construction and create lasting opportunities for Sydney’s south-west,” Member for East Hills Kylie Wilkinson said.

The State Significant Development Application for main construction activities was released for public display in April, and submissions are currently being assessed by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.

Construction of the main hospital is anticipated to begin in 2027, subject to planning approvals, once the design is completed and a builder is appointed.

The significant investment in the new Bankstown Hospital builds on the $3.4 billion commitment the State Government is making in Western Sydney health infrastructure.

The State’s health system is undergoing one of the largest hospital building programs in its history, with over $12 billion being invested to rebuild and expand hospitals across New South Wales.

“After the Liberals failed to deliver a new hospital for Bankstown, this is an exciting time for Western Sydney locals, as workers arrive on site and we can really start to see progress.

“We’re getting on with the job of delivering the hospitals and beds our growing communities need, and this is just the beginning of Bankstown’s much needed transformation.

“It won’t happen overnight, but the community can’t wait any longer and I’m looking forward to watching construction take shape over the coming months,” Minister for Health Ryan Park said.

“This is a record investment in health for a community that is growing fast. It means the families across the area I represent can count on the care they need, now and as demand keeps rising,” Member for Auburn Lynda Voltz said.
