A key stretch of the King Georges Road in New South Wales will be undergoing major works, which will ultimately provide benefits to motorists in the St George area of Sydney.
The $130 million upgrade is part of the first stage works on the $160 million King Georges Road upgrade that is jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales Governments on a 50:50 basis.
“The Australian Government is getting on with delivering infrastructure projects that improve congestion and safety for commuters across Australia.
“Good infrastructure investment creates jobs, builds opportunity and unlocks economic growth and productivity, which is exactly what this project will help achieve in south western Sydney.
“We look forward to working collaboratively with state and territory governments across Australia to deliver important upgrades like this,” Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said.
Works are going to be carried out between Stoney Creek Road in Beverly Hills and Forest Road at Hurstville. The project will include widening King Georges Road to three lanes in each direction and will be separated by a concrete median, delivering improved traffic flow as well as safety.
The multi-million-dollar project will also provide major side road access changes.
“This is an important piece of infrastructure especially to relieve congestion on King Georges Road during weekday peak periods.
“The goal of our road infrastructure is to make it easier for people to move around safely and in as little time as possible.
“The increased capacity of a widened King Georges Road will reduce travel times, giving hardworking individuals the chance to spend less time in traffic and more time with their loved ones,” NSW Metropolitan Road Minister Natalie Ward said.
Other works will include removal of right-hand turns in and out of George, Dudley, Clarence and Warwick streets along with the installation of a new dedicated right-turn bay on King Georges Road southbound into Percival Street to help reduce the risk of collisions.
On King Georges Road northbound, a longer dedicated right-turn lane is going to be provided for motorists turning right onto Stoney Creek Road. This will help reduce the times vehicles will stop around the busy intersection.
“This is an exciting milestone for commuters and the local community, who will benefit from reduced congestion, improved road safety, and better travel times thanks to this upgrade.
“This project is all about making it easier for locals to move around Sydney by easing a notorious traffic pinch point and ensuring they get home safely,” Federal Member for Barton Linda Burney said.
Weather permitting, crews will be undertaking works at night – from 8pm to 5am – to minimise disruption.
Georgiou Group has been awarded the construction contract for this project, which is anticipated to be completed by late 2024.
“The widening of King Georges Road has been talked about for some time and it is absolutely fantastic to see major works begin on such an important congestion-busting project.
“Widening King Georges Road will get local residents home sooner and safer, making sure that people spend more time with their families and friends instead of being stuck in traffic,” State Member for Oatley Mark Coure said.
