McConnell Dowell has signed an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract with the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) for works on the Shiploader 2 and Berth 2 Replacement (SABR) project at the Hay Point Coal Terminal in Queensland, near Mackay.

Under this agreement, McConnell Dowell will provide constructability input, advice and preparatory work for construction, which includes:

  • Assisting with facility design
  • Construction execution planning
  • Estimating and planning assistance

The contractor will be working closely with BMA and its design engineer, Aurecon, to establish an integrated project delivery environment that will optimise the design and construction methodology, getting the project to completion in 2023.

In a statement, McConnell Dowell said: “McConnell Dowell is thrilled to be partnering with BMA once again and bringing our leading marine construction expertise to drive innovation and project certainty.”

The SABR project will involve replacing one of the three berths and shiploaders at the Hay Point Coal Terminal, with both the wharf and shiploader reaching end of life. This project will replace both facilities and improve operability by extending the berth as well as improve storm immunity by raising the berth.
