Monadelphous Group has been awarded a major construction contract valued at $108 million for BHP’s South Flank operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Monadelphous is set to commence work under this contract immediately.

Monadelphous’ scope of works will include structural, mechanical, piping as well as electrical and instrumental works related to South Flank’s outflow infrastructure. Approximately 400 jobs are expected to be supported under this package of works - which is due to be completed in May 2021.

“BHP has been one of our core customers, for both construction and maintenance projects, for more than 20 years. We are looking forward to partnering with them on this strategically important project and continuing to build on our proven construction capability within the iron ore sector in the Pilbara,” Monadelphous Managing Director Rob Velletri said.

Major construction on the $4.88 billion South Flank project commenced in July 2018, following BHP’s announcement that it will invest $3.9 billion towards the development.

South Flank - located 120 kilometres north west of Newman - is being developed by BHP’s Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) business and it will comprise of an 80Mtpa crushing and screening plant as well as an overland conveyor system, stockyard and loading facilities. The project also includes sourcing of a new mining fleet, substantial mine development and pre-strip works.

The entire South Flank project is expected to generate up to 2,500 jobs during construction and a further 600 ongoing jobs once the mine is operational.

South Flank is anticipated to have a mine life of 25 years, with first production expected by 2021.
