Two more congested and dangerous level crossings along Victoria's Frankston Line will be permanently gone a year ahead of schedule as works are being fast tracked with the awarding of a $507 million contract.
The two level crossing removal projects at Glen Huntly is going to be delivered by an alliance between Acciona, Coleman Rail, WSP, Metro Trains Melbourne and the Level Crossing Removal Project.
The Glen Huntly Road and Neerim Road level crossings are just 2 of the 18 crossing to be removed along the Frankston Line.
Works to remove the level crossings will involve lowering the rail line into a trench.
The Glen Huntly projects will also include building a new Glen Huntly Station as well as pedestrian and cycle paths that links Ormond and Caulfield.
The new station will feature a lowered platform to improve safety and accessibility. It will also provide locals with better connections between public transport, shops and community areas.
Early works on the two level crossings will commence by the end of 2021 and major construction works to begin in 2022.
The boom gates at Glent Huntly Road and Neerim Road will be gone for good in 2023 and the entire project is due for completion in 2024, which is a year earlier than the initial announcement.
Designs for the new Glen Huntly Station is set to be released mid-year and it will incorporate community feedback collected during a recent survey.
It is expected that these projects will support hundreds of jobs during peak construction period.
