Locals and visitors will soon be able to enjoy a new over-water champagne and oyster bar in Brisbane, with works already underway on the project. This development is part of the $110 million Howard Smith Wharves project.

Though construction of the new bar has been confirmed, Howard Smith Wharves development director Luke Smith has not revealed who would operate the establishment.

The entire redevelopment will involve the restoration of a number of heritage buildings and then transform them into function spaces and restaurants.

With restoration works already completed, the construction of the new over-water champagne and oyster bar marks the final stages of the Howard Smith Wharves project.

“It will feature a river lounge so you will be able to enjoy the river and sit there and certainly enjoy the spectacular views along the reaches of the river.

“It will also feature a champagne lounge and oyster bar,” Brisbane City Council Infrastructure Chairwoman Amanda Cooper said.

The new bar is going to have an octagonal shape. To build it, eight over-water piles as well as two land-based piles are going to be constructed.

The Howard Smith Wharves redevelopment project will include:

  • A dining, retail and tourism centre that will utilise the existing heritage-listed buildings in the area
  • New public open spaces that can be used for markets and festivals
  • A five-star Art Series Hotel featuring 164 rooms
  • A hotel facade that will blend into the cliff face, featuring natural tones and textures to keep the iconic Story Bridge as the main focus of the area
  • Underground car parking for up to 359 vehicles
  • 33 employee bicycle spaces as well as a further 50 bicycle spaces that can be used by visitors throughout the parkland
  • Parkland and public open spaces that will include lifts linking the site to the top of the cliffs
  • A 1,500-SQM exhibition space

The redeveloped Howard Smith Wharves is set to open to visitors in late 2018.
