As part of the $1.13 billion Macquarie Point Stadium development, the Goods Shed is going to be packed down and Australian builder Hunter Mason has been awarded the contract to undertake the work.

Under this contract, Hunter Mason will carefully dismantle, pack, store and then rebuild the Goods Shed at a new location that has been identified where connection to place can remain, heritage can be honoured and community activation can continue.

The new site will reposition the Goods Shed with the first railway line that was built in 1876 while also placing it close to the historic location of the Train Maintenance Shed, which was of similar size and type used as part of the Hobart Rail Yards.

Tasmanian firm Hazell Brothers has also been awarded the contract to deliver bulk earthwork removal as part of the project.

Meanwhile, the Red Shed will also be removed from the site as part of the works, with salvage and conservation efforts to be carried out wherever practical. Materials as well as heritage elements that can be retained will be carefully recovered and assessed for re-use within the future Macquarie Point Stadium and precinct development.

Excavation works on site are expected to commence in July of this year.

“As a first step, Hunter Mason will be working closely with Heritage Tasmania ahead of works commencing.

“The precinct around Macquarie Point will soon begin to take shape in what is a truly exciting milestone.

“Hazell Brothers will deliver the bulk earthworks that are required to prepare the site for the entire precinct.

“The Goods Shed will become an iconic part of the stadium precinct – offering what will be a fantastic hospitality space for patrons to enjoy ahead of an event at the stadium.

“This is also about ensuring the heritage of the area is respected and incorporated into future plans, giving what will truly be a uniquely Tasmanian experience,” Minister for Macquarie Point Urban Renewal Eric Abetz said.

The new Multipurpose Stadium is a key element of the urban renewal of Macquarie Point.

The stadium will include:

  • A 1,500-person function room with views to kunanyi/Mount Wellington
  • A design informed by modelling cricket ball trajectory data to ensure Tasmania is ready to host the best quality cricket games
  • A stage pocket in the northern stand to support concerts and events, which will minimise impact on the field and reduce costs for event operators
  • Easy to follow and accessible design features – including a single continuous concourse that services the whole stadium, which means you can enter any gate and easily find your seat
  • A seating bowl design that will bring crowds closer to the action
  • Separated back of house and catering facilities with a below ground service road to separate vehicles and stadium visitors and users
  • A carefully designed cutting-edge design including a timber and steel framed fixed ETFE transparent roof, which will see Tasmania leading the world in structured timber roofing solutions
