New CopperString 2032 work packages released for local suppliers

Powerlink and its construction partners – CIMIC Group companies UGL and CPB Contractors – released 40 work packages for the CopperString 2032 project in Queensland and local suppliers are encouraged to express their interest. 

The work packages have a wide range of activities and services including engineering, construction, environmental management, logistics, camp construction, haulage, and communications. 

These work packages are designed to maximise opportunities for local businesses and communities to participate in the delivery of the CopperString 2032 project, stimulating new industries and innovation in the North West Minerals Province and unlocking the renewable energy potential of North Queensland. 

The release of the work packages is a clear indication that Powerlink is ready to commence major works on the project. 

“Since Powerlink took on this project earlier this year, we have been focused on starting work on the ground as soon as possible. 

“Our process is not just about finding the best value for money, but also about finding the best fit for our vision. That’s why we want to hear from you, the local businesses and suppliers that know the region and identify who has the capability, capacity, and experience to deliver high-quality outcomes for the CopperString 2032 project. 

“We want to work together to create a sustainable and resilient supply chain that benefits local communities along the CopperString line. 

“This is an opportunity for regional business to register their interest in being a part of a project that will transform North and North-West Queensland for generations to come,” Powerlink Executive General Manager for Major Projects Ian Lowry said. 

In partnership with the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, Powerlink and its construction partners are facilitating a series of road shows across the project area where local suppliers and contractors will have the opportunity to meet the project team while learning more about the scope and timeline of the project, and discuss potential business opportunities. 

In addition, the road shows will provide a platform for networking and collaboration among local businesses as well as industry stakeholders. 

Below are the dates and locations for the road shows: 

  • October 16 – Mount Isa 
  • October 17 – Cloncurry 
  • October 18 – Julia Creek 
  • October 19 – Hughenden 
  • October 30 – Charters Towers 
  • October 31 – Burdekin 
  • October 31 – Townsville 

Powerlink is also encouraging those who are interested in working on CopperString 2032 to register their company on the ICN Website.

The $5 billion CopperString 2032 project will deliver an 840-kilometre electricity transmission line from just south of Townsville to Mount Isa and an additional 200-kilometre transmission line that will connect new renewable generators to CopperString. 

The overall scope of CopperString 2032 includes: 

  • 500kV transmission line from just south of Townsville to Hughenden 
  • 330kV transmission line from Hughenden to Cloncurry 
  • 220kV transmission line from Cloncurry to Mount Isa 
  • Up to six new substation sites 
  • Access tracks and roads to the new substation and transmission line structures, as required
  • Laydown and taging areas
  • Site offices
  • Accommodation camps
  • Temporary works required to support construction
  • Labour hire

CopperString 2032 is anticipated to support more than 800 direct jobs during its construction phase, with ongoing jobs to be generated during operations and maintenance. 

Early works on the project will progress this year ahead of major construction in 2024. Construction on CopperString 2032 is due to be completed by 2029.
