New dedicated bus-only lanes to be built in Victoria

A new dedicated busway – Melbourne’s first – is going to be built as part of North East Link, slashing travel times as well as deliver more services, more often to Melbourne’s north eastern suburbs.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said that the Doncaster Busway is going to be a fully separated, high-speed bus route which will run from Doncaster to Victoria Park. With this median in the Eastern Freeway, buses will be able to travel up to 100km/h unimpeded by traffic which slashes travel time by 30 per cent.

“North East Link will not only take cars and trucks off local streets, it will provide a massive boost to public transport through our busiest bus corridor.

“Busses will no longer be held up weaving on and off ramps. The Doncaster Busway will create a true express ride down the middle of the Eastern Freeway.

“North East Link will make travel faster and easier for everyone – whether you drive, walk, ride or catch public transport,” Ms Allan said.

Doncaster Busway will include separated bus-only lanes on each way, providing direct access to and from Doncaster Park and Ride, and then connecting to Victoria Park precinct.

This project is also expected to create more parking for commuters, with a possible Park and Ride to be built in Bulleen.

The Victorian Government’s Streamlining Hoddle Street project is expected to increase time savings as well as improve reliability for bus commuters on the region’s busiest bus route.

State Government has invested more than $100 million to improve bus services across Victoria, with new routes and more services being introduced for Melbourne’s growing suburbs and regional towns.
