New milestone for $65m Sumners Road interchange upgrade in QLD

Monica Gameng   |   March 22, 2018

The $65 million Sumners Road upgrade in Queensland takes another step closer to beginning construction, with the design contract awarded to Arup Consultancy. Design and tendering are now underway, and early works on the project are expected to commence in late 2018.

According to Member for Mount Ommaney Jess Pugh, this interchange upgrade will improve road safety as well as reduce traffic on two of the busiest road connections in Brisbane’s south west region.

“This is great news for people who travel through western Brisbane because it will ultimately mean less time spent in the car, and more time spent doing what they enjoy,” Ms Pugh said.

Works to improve the Sumners Road interchange will include:

  • Duplicating the overpass bridge at Sumners Road, which will improve traffic flow and interchange operations
  • Signalise the intersections to replace roundabouts at each end of the bridge to improve motorway access and safety
  • Providing on-road cycle lanes, shared paths and dedicated crossing facilities that will improve active transport options

“These works will also reduce nus connection times to Darra train station for commuters as well as improving cycle paths for the thousands of people who use the Centenary Bikeway,” Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said.
