New milestone marked on VIC's $15.8bn North East Link

A new milestone has been reached on Victoria’s biggest road project - the $15.8 billion North East Link - with detailed designs revealed and will be on display across suburbs in the State’s north eastern region over the next weeks.

“These designs show the community what North East Link will look like, how it will improve local access, open up new public spaces and how it will be built to the toughest noise requirements in our State’s history,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said.

The North East Link will have twin three-lane tunnels that spans 5.3 kilometres which will protect homes and environmentally sensitive parkland above ground. The twin tunnels will have ventilation structures that will be located as far away from homes as possible.

The project design will also feature more open space with new green bridges as well as new noise standard and 25 kilometres of upgraded and new cycling and walking paths as a response to community feedback.

Other design features of the North East Link include 1.2 kilometres of lowered road in order to minimise visual impact and, at the same time, create more open space that has green land bridges.

The project is going to be built with a noise standard of 63 decibels along with better noise walls, making the North East Link the quietest motorway in Victoria alongside the West Gate Tunnel.

Once completed, the North East Link will give back local roads to the community with trucks taken off local streets, providing better travel times and less congestion in the north eastern suburbs.

“North East Link will be Victoria’s longest road tunnel, with massive land bridges and a series of high-tech interchanges to minimise impacts on homes, businesses and environmentally sensitive areas,” Mr Donnellan said.

Earlier this year, the State Government allocated approximately $110 million to fast track detailed planning and design for this massive road project.

Construction on the North East Link project is expected to commence in 2020, and open to traffic in 2027.
