Works have commenced on a replacement bridge that will help improve journeys across the Rainbow Creek Bridge in Victoria’s Gippsland region.
A new reinforced concrete bridge is being built to replace the original 1947 timber structure, boosting productivity and reducing maintenance costs while, at the same time, ensuring reliable connections for the more than 3,000 vehicles that pass through this route each day.
This project will include installing safety barriers and railings, upgrading road surfaces and line markings as well as new road pavement on approach to the new bridge.
Construction of the new bridge will be carried out to the west of the existing structure to limit traffic disruption.
“The Albanese Government understands the importance of connectivity for communities throughout Gippsland. These works will improve safety for everyone travelling through the region,” Federal Minister for Regional Development and Local Government Kristy McBain MP said.
“The original bridge over Ranbow Creek has served its purpose well and we’re now securing safety and future of our roads with the construction of this new route,” VIC Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne MP said.
Traffic management will be in place while construction is underway including temporary traffic signals, a 40 km/h speed limit and short closures during specific construction activities.
Road users are asked to be aware of the changed traffic conditions and allow extra time when travelling through the project area.
Construction of the new Rainbow Creek Bridge is anticipated to be completed in late 2026.
This project is funded by $5 million from the Australian Government under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program alongside $6.25 million from the Victorian Governments.
“This $5 million investment from the Albanese Government is about safer, more reliable journeys for the thousands of people who rely on this road every day – whether they’re commuting to work, moving freight, or travelling through Gippsland.
“Replacing this ageing bridge will strengthen a vital local connection and support the region’s economy for decades to come,” Federal Senator for Victoria Raff Ciccone said.
