Completion is nearing on the new Martin Place metro station in New South Wales as construction progresses on the new station precinct.

The landmark new Martin Place Station is being built as part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line development, which is due to begin its world-class service starting next year.

The platforms located about 25 metres below ground level are almost complete, with all tiles and wall panels already in place while the finishing touches are carried out – including installation of signage and seating along the 170-metre-long platform.

The 25 escalators around the station that will service commuters are currently undergoing testing and commissioning and the 14 lift shafts are ready to be fitted with elevators in October of this year.

The new Martin Place Station precinct will have a span of more than one city block, and it will feature 3,000-SQM of retail, dining and beverage outlets over three floors. Shopfronts are already in place and tenants will be handed the keys to begin their fit-outs in early 2024.

The new metro station will enable commuters to seamlessly move from Martin Place to Hunter Street through a newly built all-weather pedestrian walkway, along with easy and direct access to existing platforms at Martin Place Station that will join Sydney Train services on the T4 Eastern Suburb & Illawarra Line.

Above the new Martin Place underground station, the 39-storey building at the northern entrance was topped out at the end of June this year while the 28-storey office building at the southern entrance will be topped out in September.

Over the coming months, Sydney Metro’s construction partner Lendlease will focus on building the station entrances. The sections of Martin Place Plaza used during construction will begin re-opening to the public in early 2024.

“It’s full steam ahead to complete work at Martin Place as we work towards the opening of the new line between Chatswood and Sydenham to passengers next year.

“50,000 people have worked on this project from start to finish, so the state-of-the0art station [taking shape] is testament to their brilliant work.

“Metro will be a transformative project for Sydney, and this landmark station will offer passengers an incredible new transport hub, coupled with commercial, retail and dining options,” Minister for Transport Jo Haylen said.

The new Martin Place Station precinct is located to the south of Hunter Street between Castlereagh and Elizabeth streets in Sydney’s CBD.

The new metro station will also feature new bike parking hoops on Castlereagh Street, existing bus stops retained on Elizabeth and Castlereagh streets, retained existing taxi ranks close to the station, and wayfinding signage and Sydney Metro information.

Once Sydney Metro trains begin running under the harbour and through the city, commuters will be able to travel from Martin Place to Central in about four minutes, to Victoria Cross in five minutes, or to Sydenham in around 11 minutes.
