The New South Wales Government has revealed the preferred route for the Beaches Link and Western Harbour tunnels.

On the plans, the Beaches Link tunnel will be connected to the Warringah Freeway then cross underneath Middle harbour and connect with the Burnt Bridge Creek Deviation in Balgowlah. The plans also include Wakehurst Parkway, between Seaforth and French Forest, upgraded to two lanes on each side.

Motorists who will be using the tunnels will bypass up to 19 sets of traffic lights as well as decrease travel times between Brookvale and the CBD by up to 40 minutes. The tunnels will also be reducing up to 45 minutes in travel time between Manly and Parramatta.

Bus commuters from Northern Beaches could also see reduced travel times by 40 per cent, with less “rat-running” on local streets.

At this stage, the State Government has already done the following:

  • Started contacting 71 property owners who may be directly impacted by the route
  • Committed $77 million to undertake geotechnical work along the route
  • Started a market-sounding process involving the private sector to look into funding and delivery options
  • Started community information sessions

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) will ensure that those who will be impacted are given updates as the project progresses.

“The NSW Government is committed to delivering this important project which will reduce congestion along the gridlocked Spit and Military Roads and provide a Sydney Harbour and Anzac Bridge bypass for Western and Southern Sydney motorists,” said NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
