Another Newell Highway upgrade in New South Wales will soon become a reality as the Australian Government invests $22.96 million for the Tooraweenah Road Upgrade project.

Fully funded through the Roads of Strategic Importance initiative, the project will upgrade about 56.8 kilometres of Tooraweenah Road in the Coonamble Shire to improve safety as well as help reduce road maintenance and operating costs in addition to increasing regional activity and flood immunity along the route.

“The project is part of the Australian Government’s overall $300 million commitment to the Newell Highway Roads of Strategic Importance corridor.

“This investment will improve flood resilience, safety, localised congestion and overtaking opportunities, and further demonstrates that our Government is delivering the road infrastructure upgrades locals need and deserve as part of our $110 billion infrastructure pipeline,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said.

The Tooraweenah Road Upgrade will include widening the entire stretch of road, sealing about 25.4 kilometres along with heavy patching and rehabilitation works on approximately 31.4 kilometres of sealed sections of the road.

“I’m so pleased that the funds are now available so that works can get underway on this important section of road.

“These upgrades will improve access, reduce travel times and increase safety for all roads users, ensuring motorists get to their destination sooner and safer,” Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said.

Mr Coulton added that this project complements other infrastructure projects in the region that are currently underway.

About $1.55 billion has been committed by the Australian Government towards infrastructure projects across Parkes since 2013.

“The Australian Government will continue to invest in and deliver the infrastructure projects that matter to locals, tourists and businesses across regional New South Wales,” Mr Coulton said.

Major construction activities on the Tooraweenah Road Upgrade project are due to commence in July 2022 and be completed by May 2024.

This project is part of the broader Toowoomba to Seymour Corridor where the Australian Government has invested $510 million – $300 million to New South Wales, $160 million to Victoria and $50 million to Queensland.
