The Northern Territory Government has announced the opening of a public tender for small mining environmental and public safety works for a number of mines near Tennant Creek.
The tender will cover 17 historical mine workings around the Tennant Creek area which have safety issues, providing job opportunities for locals.
“Works covered in this tender will improve the safety of 39 open mine workings including shafts, open stopes and adits using a combination of backfilling, mesh covers, chain link fences and signage.
“These sites have been prioritised due to their close proximity to town and evidence of people going to these locations,” said Minister for Resources Ken Vowles.
According to Mr Vowles, these works will make the areas involved safer for visitors as well as the residents of Tennant Creek. The Minister also said that the State Government is delivering on its promise to develop Tennant Creek into a mining services centre for the Northern Territory region.
“The Government is pleased to be able to provide economic development opportunities and jobs for local and Indigenous businesses in through involvement in mine remediation activities in the Tennant Creek region,” Mr Vowles said.
Mr Vowles added that a local development strategy which includes increasing the local development as well as value adding weighting in tenders beyond the 30 per cent minimum to 40 per cent has helped provide opportunities for local businesses.
“This approach to date has resulted in almost every contract being issued to local businesses with high levels of Indigenous employment,” Mr Vowles said.
