Pilbara businesses prioritised for work on Spoilbank Marina project WA

Just days after project design was finalised, the Western Australian Government has launched a Pilbara business register where local businesses can lodge in their interest in working on the $121.5 million Spoilbank Marina project in Port Hedland. 

This initiative is going to be provided to prospective lead contractors in the Pilbara which will help fast track the engagement of local workers and material suppliers. 

“The Spoilbank Marina is a massive project for Hedland and will involve considerable work opportunities for Pilbara businesses. 

“This register gives local businesses the chance to get in early and flag their interest and expertise in civil infrastructure projects, ensuring the best possible opportunity to be a part of this transformational project,” Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan said. 

In addition, a request for proposals to deliver marine works will be released to market in the coming weeks and contracts will be awarded shortly after. 

The Spoilbank Marina project will deliver: 

• A four-lane boat ramp 
• 21 boat-pen marina with capacity to expand to 80 pens in the future 
• Separate entrance channel to the main shipping channel 
• Trailer parking for up to 200 vehicles 
• Maintenance hardstand 
• Publicly accessible breakwaters with pedestrian path 
• Public recreation and event space and public amenities 
• Public fishing jetty 
• Water feature 
• Shade structures at swimming beach 
• Waterfront promenade to reflect the Yintha Kariyarra creation serpent story 
• Public art and a cultural gathering space 

The construction of the Spoilbank Marina project is expected to take about two years to complete and is estimated to create up to 221 direct jobs. 

This project’s key focus is the creation of local jobs and opportunities for local businesses in Port Hedland and the wider Pilbara region. 

“We’re urging Hedland businesses to register now, so local businesses and workers are front-and-centre on the Spoilbank Marina project. 

“This project will create more than 200 jobs during construction, and will provide a boost to the local economy as the State recovers from COVID-19,” Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said. 

Early works are anticipated to begin in October of this year.
