Rio Tinto has awarded a contract valued at $90 million to construction company Pindan Contracting for the delivery of an operations village that will support the Koodaideri iron ore project in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

Pindan’s contract will include the design and construction of Koodaideri’s main accommodation village that will comprise of 470 rooms as well as eight laundries, a 1,200-person kitchen/dining hall, a gymnasium, a recreation building with cafe and alfresco space, an administration office, and shop.

“We have a long history of working with Rio Tinto and working in the Pilbara and we’re looking forward to partnering on this next phase of construction of the Koodaideri Village. We expect this contract to provide 350 jobs over 12 months, which is great news for the region,” Pindan Contracting Managing Director Tony Gerber said.

The Koodaideri iron ore project is located approximately 110 kilometres from Newman and it is set to become Rio Tinto’s new major hub in the Pilbara. The project will include the construction of a processing plant and related infrastructure as well as a 166-kilometre rail line the will link to Rio Tinto’s existing rail network, an airport, support facilities and an accommodation village for mine workers.

In November of last year, Rio Tinto has invested $3.5 billion towards the development of the iron ore project. You can read more about it here.

The entire Koodaideri project is anticipated to support up to 2,000 jobs during its construction and approximately 600 ongoing positions once the mine is operational.

The mine is expected to commence production in 2021, and will have a capacity of 43Mtpa.
