Planning for the $125 million Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade in Queensland is progressing well and the community is showing strong support for the project that will improve safety as well as provide a solution for several issues at the Gympie Arterial Road and Linkfield Road interchange.

“The community are extremely supportive if the upgrade with key themes around improving the interchange and widening or duplicating the Linkfield Road Overpass.

“Detailed planning for the overpass upgrade is almost complete, with the preferred design option expected to be confirmed soon,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said.

Through an extensive community consultation phase, the project team has gathered local views and knowledge that will be reflected in the detailed plans for the overpass upgrade.

Feedback from the community includes active transport solutions, improvements to ramp connections from Linkfield Road to Gympie Arterial Road as well as installation of traffic lights to replace a ‘give way’ sign when turning right onto Linkfield Road from Gympie Arterial Road.

“In total, the project team received more than 150 feedback submissions via online survey, email, phone and face-to-face information sessions, and 86 per cent were supportive of an upgrade.

“I would like to thank the community for their feedback,” Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said.

This project aims to reduce congestion and traffic queue lengths on the overpass as well as improve the geometry of the interchange ramp and provide much-needed active transport options through the interchange.

“The potential duplication and upgrade of the Linkfield Road Overpass is a priority for locals in terms of improving safety and capacity at the Linkfield Road and Gympie Arterial interchange.

“My conversations out in the community are all about road upgrades. I am urging the State Government to bring this infrastructure forward to 2022. A multi-vehicle accident at the intersection on ramp in September, that sadly resulted in a fatality, shows how vital this upgrade is,” Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth MP said.

As the project progresses further, the Transport and Main Roads team will continue providing updates to the community.

The $125 million Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments on an 80:20 basis, with the former contributing $100 million and the latter contributing $25 million towards the project.
