The New South Wales Government has unveiled plans for a major upgrade at Rawson Road and Railway Street in Woy Woy to make one of the Central Coast’s level crossings safer.
Transport for NSW and Sydney Trains have kicked off detailed design works to overhaul the level crossing as well as adjoining intersection after years of community concern and several crashes.
This project is funded through the State Government’s Towards Zero Safer Roads Program and Sydney Trains’ Level Crossing Safety Improvement Program.
There were 14 crashes at the project site between July 2019 and June 2024, including three serious injuries, and this prompted calls from locals for urgent action.
“Families, commuters and kids walking to and from the station have been dealing with this dangerous crossing for too long, so we’re stepping in to fix it.
“Our message is simple: everyone deserves to get home safely. This project will help make that happen,” Premier Chris Minns said.
“This crossing has been the site of far too many crashes, and locals have been telling us loud and clear that it needs attention.
“This upgrade will make every journey through Woy Woy safer – whether you’re walking, cycling, catching a train or driving,” Minister for Roads and Minister for Regional Transport Jenny Aitchison said.
“This has been a long-standing community concern, and I’m thrilled we’re delivering real action.
“Fixing this crossing will improve safety, cut risk, and make it easier for locals and visitors to move around our beautiful Peninsula,” Minister for the Central Coast David Harris said.

The community will be invited to have their say on the detailed design once it is finalised in 2026. Meanwhile, timing for construction will be confirmed following planning approvals.
“Anyone who lives here knows how busy and stressful this crossing can get, especially at school pick-up, during peak hour or on summer weekends.
“These upgrades will make a huge difference for Woy Woy and the Gosford community,” Member for Gosford Liesl Tesch said.
“This is an important project for the local community, and also for people travelling through Woy Woy to the town centre, hospitals or popular Peninsula holiday locations.
“We look forward to working with Transport for NSW and Sydney Trains to ensure residents and visitors can enjoy increased safety and reduced risk when using the level crossing,” Central Coast Council Mayor Lawrie McKinna said.
