Up to $24 million has been invested by Powerlink Queensland for the Mackay Substation upgrade. The upgrade will help further secure the supply of electricity as well as support the continuing growth of the economy in the region.

This six-year upgrade project will be supporting 39 jobs and works will include a transformer upgrade, switchyard rebuilding and the installation of a new support system which will improve network performance. Construction has commenced on stage one and planning for stage two is well underway.

According to Minister for Energy Mark bailey, the upgrade will ensure that the Mackay region has a reliable and cost effective high voltage electricity supply.

“Powerlink’s transmission network plays an important role in powering the Queensland economy, being responsible for providing electricity to almost four million people.

“Mackay is a major business centre for the mining, agricultural and tourism industries so it is critical the region continues to have access to a reliable supply of electricity,” Mr Bailey said.

Construction on the Mackay Substation is expected to be completed by 2019.
